The short answer

Most people do not need an electrolyte drink every day. On a cool, quiet day, food and water cover it. Electrolytes make sense on the days you sweat: training, hot weather, long days outdoors and busy on-your-feet days. That is what Lula is for: one scoop, once a day, on the days you ask more of yourself.

  • Sweat carries sodium out with the water. Plain water replaces the fluid, not the minerals.
  • A daily scoop suits people who train most days or are active and sweating most days.
  • Lula has 1,000 mg sodium per scoop. If you have been told to limit salt, check with your GP first.
The honest answer

Do you need electrolytes every day?

For a healthy adult on a cool day with a normal diet, no. Food provides sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium, and in the UK most adults already eat more salt than the guidelines suggest. The NHS says adults should have no more than 6 g of salt a day.

Where it changes is sweat. Sweat is mostly water, but it carries sodium out with it, plus some potassium and a little magnesium. How much varies a lot between people. On a sweaty day, drinking only plain water replaces the fluid but not the minerals that left with it.

So the useful question is not "every day?" but "which days?". If you train most days, work on your feet, or live through a hot spell, a daily scoop is a simple routine. If your week is mostly desk and sofa, keep Lula for the days you move.

Wondering how much plain water to drink in a day? Our guide on how much water to drink a day sets out the NHS and EFSA figures.

One scoop, at most, a day. Lula has 1,000 mg sodium per scoop. That is plenty for one day's glass. If you have a medical condition or have been advised to limit salt, speak with your GP first.

When a scoop fits

The days Lula earns its place

Gym and classes

Weights, spin, HIIT, circuits. Warm rooms and a lot of sweat. Mix a bottle as you change and sip through.

Runs

Long runs, tempo days, summer miles. See our guide for runners for bottle and timing tips.

Rides

Longer rides and indoor turbo sessions, where sweat drips off you. One bottle with Lula, one with plain water.

Hot days

Heatwaves, holidays, commutes on a packed train. The days you finish damp before you start.

Long days outdoors

Walks, festivals, gardening, coaching the kids on a Saturday. Hours in the sun add up.

Back-to-back days

A busy training week or a run of long shifts. A daily glass so you start the next day topped up.

Gym and workouts

Electrolytes for the gym, before or after a workout

There is no perfect moment. What matters is that you drink, and that on sweaty sessions some of what you drink carries electrolytes.

  • Before: mix a 500 ml to 750 ml bottle in the changing room so it is ready.
  • During: sip between sets or stations. Keep plain water to hand as well.
  • After a workout: one scoop in a big glass of ice-cold water, 750 ml to 1 litre, is how many of us take our daily serve.

Lula is not a pre-workout. There is no caffeine and no stimulants, so it will not add to your coffee or your pre-workout. It has 7.7 kcal per scoop, so it is not fuel either. Eat as you normally would.

Water is half the story

Water replaces the fluid. Not the minerals.

Your nerves and muscles run on the gradient between sodium outside cells and potassium inside them. Sweat takes sodium with it. That is the plain reason electrolyte drinks exist.

  • Sweat rates vary a lot between people, and so does how salty their sweat is.
  • Heat, humidity, effort and kit all change how much you sweat.
  • Plain water is the right drink for most of the day. On sweaty days, a measured scoop adds the minerals back.

General physiology for context, not a claim about Lula. Lula is a food supplement. Any health claims relate to its magnesium content.

Make it a habit

How to make it a daily routine

  1. Pick one moment. After the school run, after training, or at 3pm at your desk. The same time each day is easiest.
  2. Keep the jar where you will see it. On the kitchen counter, or in the gym bag.
  3. Make it cold. Ice-cold water, 750 ml to 1 litre. You will actually look forward to it.
  4. Subscribe if you use it most days. A jar is 20 scoops. The subscription sends one jar each calendar month with free UK shipping, and you can pause, skip or cancel anytime. See today's price on the product page.

Good to know

Questions, answered

Do I need electrolytes every day?

Usually not on a cool, quiet day: food and water cover it. Electrolytes make sense on days you sweat, such as training, hot weather or long days outdoors. If you are active and sweating most days, a daily scoop is a simple routine.

Is it OK to drink electrolytes every day?

For most healthy adults, one scoop of Lula a day is within the label's daily dose. It has 1,000 mg sodium, so if you have been told to limit salt, or have a medical condition, speak with your GP first.

Should I drink electrolytes before or after a workout?

Either works. Mix a bottle to sip during the session, or have one scoop in a big glass of ice-cold water afterwards. Keep to one scoop a day.

Are electrolytes good for the gym?

Electrolyte drinks are popular for sweaty gym sessions because sweat contains sodium. Lula is an electrolyte drink with no caffeine, no added sugar and 1.2 g of amino acids. We do not claim it changes how you train.

Is Lula only for athletes?

No. It is for active people: training days and ordinary busy, sweaty ones too.

Is Lula a pre-workout?

No. There is no caffeine and no stimulants.

What is the difference between Lula and plain water?

Lula is water plus a measured scoop of electrolytes (1,000 mg sodium, 250 mg potassium, 75 mg magnesium, 50 mg calcium) and 1.2 g of amino acids, in natural peach. We do not claim it hydrates better than water.

How long does a jar last?

20 scoops, so 20 days at one scoop a day.
